I plan to use these leveled readers in my small groups, 4-6 students, targeting specific skills and fluency.
Research shows if a student is not on grade level by third grade, he or she will have greater odds of continuing to be a struggling reader.
This is because, the framework of education, really only teaches "how to read" through second grade. After that, students read for comprehension, not decoding, phonics, or fluency. Third grade students are expected to start the beginning of the year as an independent reader. This means it is vital students leave the second grade as a fluent reader!
