Children need to have math experiences that incorporate their senses, that require them to experiment and make observations, and that allow them time to investigate a topic further. Children learning math need to assimilate concepts at their own rate.
Early math is not about the rote learning of discrete facts like how much 2 + 3 equals. Rather, it's about children actively making sense of the numbers. Unlike drills or worksheets with one correct answer, open-ended, playful exploration encourages children to solve problems in real situations.
My project is to infuse my math curriculum and teaching practices with learning resources for addition and subtraction, shapes, and other concepts through games. These games will strengthen my students problem solving and reasoning processes as well as representing, communicating, and connecting mathematical ideas.
These games will help actively introduce mathematical concepts, methods, and language through a range of appropriate experiences and teaching strategies.
