Our school recently started a Gay Straight Alliance Club at the middle school level. We've had some good conversations and done some introspective and fun activities. However, the school does not fund any materials or conferences to further support our students. These students need access to books that put a name and a face to some of the feelings they themselves may be going through.
What better way for teenagers to find comfort than by reading fiction that has characters that they can relate to. Imagine reading book after book with characters that don't mirror any of the real issues that you are dealing with. These books offer a variety of topics facing our LGBTQ youth. They are books that they can read individually or that we can read and discuss as a group.
