The students and staff of TI have been through a lot in the last 6 months. Many of our students' homes flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Unfortunately, the safe haven of the school also flooded. The students and staff had to be relocated and are sharing a school at the moment. I just joined the school in January as the new librarian. I have been amazed at the resiliency of the students and the perseverance of the teachers.
Both the students and the staff have made the best of the situation as well as they can. The students and staff at TI are moving back to our home campus over Presidents' Day weekend to an empty school and will have to rebuild. We have been fortunate enough to have shared a library up until now because the entire library collection of books and resources were destroyed by the flood waters of Hurricane Harvey.
My students are in need of books and makerspace materials. We would like to add more graphic novels like "A Wrinkle in Time", "The City of Ember", and "El Deafo". We will be adding several Pura Delpre award winners to get more books that represent our student population. We will add a 3Doodler to our maker space area to help boost interest in STEAM and spark creativity in our students. These books and makerspace materials will help our school library slowly get rebuilt and will allow our students to continue to learn and pursue their passions. Our ultimate goal is to get books into the hands our students as quickly as possible.
