Our 5th grade students' first day of learning to play the recorder. They were engaged, their fingers were poised and they were also amazed on how quickly they were able to begin playing a piece of a familiar tune! Now that's awesome!
Our high school student volunteer started this project from the kindness of her heart and donated approximately 22-25 recorders to one of our fifth grade classrooms. She visited the classroom for the first time and found students eager to learn by paying close attention, asking questions and enthusiastic about learning how to play the recorder.
The idea is that skills (i.e., dedication, enthusiasm and perseverance) that are normally acquired as a result of learning a musical instrument will transfer and have just as positive of an impact in other academic areas such as literacy, mathematics and writing.
Congratulations, 5th graders!
