My students come from various cultural backgrounds. In order to encourage children to become passionate about books and reading, it is important for them to be able to form a connection with the main character. These books will do that for my students. We will continue to build this classroom library with books that are relevant to all students, not just some.
My hope is that upon reading about a character who looks like them, my students will continue to pick up books searching for themselves in every story. Finding a text that is not only interesting, but representative of who you are is an amazing feeling! My kids are emergent readers and I hope that with these books, their love for reading grows as they become stronger readers.
These books will also be used as read alouds in the classroom from which we can discuss themes and big ideas. We will look at the characters and their traits, study story elements, retell events from the stories, and identify and discuss the parts of the story that stood out to us. Lastly, the zippered pouches will work to store the students' books, rather than using disposable zipper seal bags to help us reduce waste.
