I work in a public school in Fremont, California teaching first graders in our Spanish Dual Immersion Program. I teach both Spanish native speakers and English dominant students, in a 90-10 Spanish Dual Immersion model. With this model, I am responsible for teaching my students the core curriculum in Spanish because I teach second grade. A large percentage of my students receive free and reduced lunch and come from immigrant families who have little or no formal education. My English-dominant students are enrolled in the program because their parents understand the value of a multi-lingual education. Some of these parents have very limited Spanish background.
