Elementary school can be stressful for our students as they learn new curriculum, follow and meet classroom and school expectations, as well as navigate new social situations. The counseling office is accessible to ALL students. It is a quiet environment where students can de-escalate when upset, learn new coping strategies, and reset before re-joining their class.
A typical student will come into the counseling office upset. We talk about what happened and what actions they can control. After our chat, I encourage the student to play a game or participate in an activity to clear their mind so they don't dwell on the situation keeping them from learning. Students love the five minutes of fun they have before heading back to class!
