I teach science and academic support electives to 6th–8th graders at Oliver Middle School in Portland, Oregon, where a majority of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and nearly half are English Learners, bringing a wide range of perspectives, talents, and experiences to the classroom. In this brand-new role, I’m starting with very limited materials, making outside support essential as I teach coding, environmental service learning, and academic support—courses designed to give students meaningful, hands-on experiences that connect to real-world skills. My goal is to help students strengthen problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking while building the confidence they need to succeed in the future.
