In my English Language Arts class, students are expected to always have a book on hand. What they read is their choice, as long as it is challenging and interesting. Students are given time throughout the school day to read, and they use their novels to complete homework assignments to help master concepts such as plot mapping and characterization. All students create a blog that is a place of reflection on their thoughts and analysis of their novel. My students know that if they finish their assignment early, then they have time to try to get through that next chapter in their book.
With this project, students will be able to start the new school year off with brand new books that will inspire them in their independent reading. With a range of reading levels, these novels will help my returning students find something new and interesting to read, a feat that can be challenging for those who will have me as their teacher for a third year in a row! For all of my students, this project will help show how our classroom is a place of scholarship and learning, and that we are never done with reading!
