We are map starved!! Teaching without these maps is like trying to ride a bike without tires! Every subject I teach: social studies, language arts, science, visual and performing arts and math have connections to world and national locations. My students need to be able to see, touch and understand the world around them.
As a veteran teacher, I see the value in each student being able to visualize and understand the skills of map reading. I will use these maps when reading a book that refers to the author's life or a location in a non-fiction book. In Science, students will find the location of the endangered species we are studying (the Saiga from Russia, the Tasmanian Devil from Australia, the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect and the Woolemi Pine from Australia). Students will find where the local Native Americans (Kumeyaay Indians) lived and traveled. Every subject needs a map!
