The novels that my students typically read in class are classics with important themes to them. However, this does not mean that the novels are always relatable or necessarily engaging to every student. Introducing a more current novel to my students will hopefully help them engage with the themes that I am trying to teach to them as well as to help them become more interested in reading.
That is why I have felt that it is necessary to have a class set of the novel, The Hate U Give. This book contains current themes, is recent and has proven to be relatable for a diverse group of students.
