The six person listening center will provide my students with access to assistive technology designed to increase literacy skills through listening. Students in my junior high special education classroom currently and for years into the future will benefit greatly from a listening center. Increased literacy skills will be the primary academic benefit.
Students will increase in literacy skills such as phonological awareness, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. Reading labs involving small groups of one to six students will be implemented to provide instruction ranging from recognizing the relationship between letters and sound, to spelling, to narrative skills. The center will also be used as a way for students to independently access literature. The listening center will give the gifts of literature to my students. Gifts including the ability to travel to unknown worlds, explore human nature, and make forever friends.
