My students live in a high poverty area, and my school has a high minority population. It is my goal to make them enthusiastic about learning and to see that writing doesn't just take place during writing, and we do use math for more than just games. My kids are high-energy students! It is not uncommon to hear, "Mrs. Johnson, I LOVE school," or groans of disappointment when a holiday or day off is coming. When I pick my kids up from the library, they are bursting at the seams with excitement to tell me about the books they selected, and they often ask the librarian to help them find a copy of a text we read in class. They are learning to use their books and other materials in our room as resources and references for writing.
