80 percent of the children in our district live below the poverty line, and over 1/3 of the children do not speak English at home. Although I am not bilingual, I do teach ESL students, who are learning to speak English as their second language. My classroom is an inclusive classroom that also contains children that require special education.
Because these 6 year old children have so many challenges coming their way, it is important to ensure that they have access to many different types of resources. There are so many different types of learning styles in any classroom, and it is important to incorporate a variety of activities that address everyone in the classroom.
An exemplary first grade teacher strives to ensure that he or she is not only providing his or her students with the fundamentals of reading and math that they will use for the rest of their lives, but also teaching them how to become life-long learners for themselves in this ever-changing society. This is my goal.
