Franklinton High School is set in a rural area in North Carolina. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds -- some have lived in other areas of the United States and some have only experienced life in our state. The culinary arts students I teach are curious about cooking and interested in learning. Some students are learning as a prelude to attending culinary school but some students want to use these skills to take better care of themselves and their families in the future.
It is important to teach students the fundamental skills of culinary arts as well as challenge them to use their creativity. In our class, we learn safety, sanitation and measurement. We also run a teacher lunch program for the teachers in our school. A natural extension of our class, students continue to learn skills for life that they will use in the workforce, whatever career path they choose.
