Most of my students are considered "disadvantaged" because they fall into one or more of the following categories: poor, parents who aren't highly educated, minorities, and/or English language learners. Though considered an urban school in a highly populated area of California, my students are geographically isolated. This geographic isolation can lead to a very narrow experience of life.
My specific group of students are 7th graders with learning disabilities. I teach them skills they lack in reading, math , and other areas. Many have a difficult time reading, so they avoid it whenever possible. In years past, I have seen them enthralled with the right novel, such as " The Outsiders." I believe "Phineas Gage" will draw them into nonfiction in the same way. They are also interested in current events so short magazine articles are another great way to encourage them to read.
