Our middle school is having a huge transition in our math department this year. All students will now have a double block of math class. The second period is designed to give teachers time to work with students in small groups at their independent levels of understanding. During this time the other students will be working at centers in order to practice their skills. Students will be able to problem-solve, work with hands-on manipulatives, explore deeper thinking and talk about math with their peers.
VersaTiles are a great self-checking tool for students to use during this center time. They combine standards-aligned skill practice with the challenge of a puzzle. I personally have already purchased all of the activity books and 10 sets of answer cases to use in the classroom, but my students could really benefit from having a class set so that they can use them independently during center time, and possibly RtI time. Having an answer case for each student will give me the opportunity to differentiate the skills the students are working on.
