The Live Butterfly kit will give my students the opportunity to experience the butterflies' life cycle. Having the live caterpillars in the classroom will allow students to have that hands-on experience where they can observe and study the caterpillars on a daily basis. Students will have the opportunity to watch the caterpillars grow as they journal the process. As they study the caterpillars students will be highly engaged when they discover the caterpillars spinning the silk inside the clear cups. My students will be amazed as they see the caterpillars molt several times during their process.
Not only will my students be engaged in writing and drawing about the experience, they will be able to incorporate math into this once in a lifetime experience. Students will apply their measuring skills as they measure the caterpillars to the nearest inch. They will get to compare the data as the caterpillars are growing daily to complete their life cycle.
As the caterpillars begin to turn into a pupa shell, students will be excited to examine the chrysalis up close and actually see the caterpillars body shape inside the shell. Using the butterfly books and other resources students will get to learn more about the change that is occurring inside the chrysalis. At the end, my students will be highly engaged as they learn the life cycle of a butterfly.
