As time has passed since Hurricane Harvey, we have learned that everything was gutted in our rooms due to water damage and mold growth. Our district has received many donations but they were only the very basic needs such as backpacks, paper, binders, markers, crayons, glue, scissors, pencils, etc. As for my teaching, I have a total of seven classes a day with roughly 150 students who are of need of real science supplies. I am looking to support my students learning through taking abstract concept learning to hands- on experiences.
The first project I wish to do with my students requires Air Mass & Convection Kits that will help students understand what air masses are, how they are formed and how they are affected by changes in temperature and moisture. It will also help my students understand what fronts are, how they are formed and what effects convection currents can have on air masses. All skills that will not just assist them on the STAAR – but will carry over into lifetime learning. I would love to continue the hands-on learning, my students' transition from global weather patterns to topographic maps. Topographic map concepts are difficult for student to understand. The kits will give them hands on ability to solidify those concepts. Map books will be continued practice so my students can master the concepts and feel confident as they take the STAAR test.
My hope is to provide students with the visual representation to enhance their learning of weather patterns and topography. These kits and maps will help students master these principles so that they can start to explore the larger universe.
Thank you for your consideration.
