My students often need the use of a scientific calculator in my math classes, especially the advanced classes. Even when a few of them have their own scientific calculators, they are likely to be different brands and even different models within a brand. Here is an example of why this can make it difficult for my students: Quite often we are finding the root of a number, other than a square root, or raising a number to a power, other than squaring a number. Different calculators can require different steps to arrive at the solution. If each of my students had the same model of a scientific calculator to use, they would then be more likely be able to successfully complete the task.
