My classroom is based on the work of Peter Liljedahl as outlined in his book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. Students work in groups of 3 to solve tasks that explore our standards in a deep and meaningful way.
According to Dr Liljedahl's work, students working on vertical whiteboards were more eager to start a problem and stayed on task longer than students working on other surfaces or those who were sitting with whiteboards. He found that vertical whiteboards reduce the students' risk of trying out an idea; allowed for less distractions and distractible behaviors; and stimulated "knowledge mobility," which is when students use their peers as resources for problem-solving ideas.
I am requesting your help in purchasing whiteboards that will be hung around my classroom so my students can reap all of the benefits listed above. We work in groups almost daily, and since working vertically will improve their overall engagement with the problems, it will also increase success.
