I'm a math coach at an inner-city pre-K to 8 school. My focus for this project is the kindergarten to grade 4 children.
Teaching in an impoverished district, our classroom teachers use any resource available to enhance student learning, often including their own paychecks.
Research has shown number lines provide a good mental strategy for counting, measurement, addition and subtraction. These are all important foundational skills.
I'm also requesting pencil grips after numerous conversations with teachers I support and my own observations in classrooms. The importance of correct pencil grip appears to have slipped away. We often see students rubbing or shaking their hands after a relatively short period of writing. The grips should help correct this issue, enhancing student writing stamina.
