My students live in a small, rural community in NE Oklahoma.
Our middle school has a population of approximately 130 students which includes the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. They are a bright bunch of kids with a great future if given the opportunity. My students do not see the use in math yet, however, they can program their phones, and outwit our tech department on our school computers.
It is great fun to engage the students, as they will compete with each other to see who can complete the task the fastest. Sometimes, completing a task the fastest is not the goal, but precision and accuracy instead. This is where the tablets will be the greatest help, self-checking the students and allowing them to see their errors right away. They need that instant gratification which shows them they did something right. This, in turn, gives them the motivation to continue learning math.
