My second graders already view themselves as mathematicians, but with these materials they will be able to flourish even more! These manipulatives will provide my students more hands-on experiences with math in my classroom. I prefer to run a math workshop, allowing students to work in small groups, providing for collaboration, which also boosts independence and engagement. Tools such as magnetic block sets, folding activities, ten-frames, and math dice will help me work with my students in small groups allowing me to differentiate my instruction.
All of these math materials will cover second grade Common Core State Standards in four critical areas: extending understanding of base-ten notation, building fluency with addition and subtraction, using standard units of measure, and describing and analyzing shapes. Second graders are learning how to regroup and the Hands-on Addition and Subtraction Kits will be very helpful. Place value is essential for learning regrouping, and the Magnetic Place Value Blocks will help students demonstrate this skill.
