Before the COVID pandemic shut down the schools, my students were playing classroom instruments with skill and working as part of a group on a weekly basis. My theatre students were a week away from performing on our stage in a musical.
Students in every grade (K-5) have lost at least a year of playing musical instruments and the social skills and benefits of being part of an ensemble making them a grade level behind. Although students were attending music online, technology makes performing music as a group impossible. Students had to record themselves playing or perform without the benefit of me as the teacher being able to help them progress. Don't get me wrong, my students worked extremely hard, but the situation made it difficult to keep performing at the same level. Many students find music as a way to express themselves in ways they cannot verbalize. Often playing and creating music just helps make students feel better.
If funded this project will provide much needed mallets so my students (K-5) will be able to perform as a group and make great gains to get their skills back to the appropriate level after distance learning. Part of the project will help to get accompaniment music into our PA system so our students can perform for their peers and our community.
