My scholars are inner-city students attending a fourth year, in-district, turnaround school. In the past 3 years they have made historic gains. In fact, among public schools serving more than 50 students, UP Academy Dorchester had the highest one-year increase in Math and ELA proficiency in Massachusetts state history. My students are some of the most resilient, willing children I have ever encountered. Fourth graders growing up in low-income communities are already, on average, three years behind their peers in high-income communities.
The school is composed of 96% Black and Hispanic students, all of whom receive free lunch. It is my hope that through developing meaningful and enjoyable centers with the help of gracious donors, their skill sets can be strengthened and they will continue to make significant gains that put them on par with their peers throughout the state and the country.
