Inventive, motivated, excited, these are all words I'd use to describe my students. MAST Academy is a public, county wide magnet school which accepts students from throughout Miami-Dade County. We service students from throughout Miami-Dade County and some of our students come from as far south and west as the Redlands or as far north as the Dade-Broward line. Students in my engineering class all choose the course as an elective and many stay for hours after school to take part in a no credit after school robotics program. Strong independent learners; often one needs only create the spark before they're off and learning on their own, far surpassing what was explicitly taught in class. To do this however we need access to the parts needed to light the spark.
Our program, started 6 years ago has grown to 215 students, almost a quarter of our school's population. While not all of these students go on to become engineers, a large number of them go on to pursue STEM careers.
