As a Special Education Teacher, I often struggle to bring real world connections into the classroom, especially because of my students' limited life experiences. They have difficulty thinking about the future and what jobs they might realistically obtain. Math and language concepts often seem foreign to them since they do not see the purpose of learning them. My students need something to motivate them and give them an application to their critical academic, vocational and social skills. This is where the idea was born for The Coffee Cart: a student-run small business that will serve the faculty and staff in our school.
My students will use these supplies to begin their Coffee Cart business. We plan to create a Google Doc on which staff can place their orders. Faculty and staff will choose the type of beverage they want as well as any additions (creamer, sugar, etc.). During the first period of our school day, the students will use Google Doc orders to make the coffee and deliver it. Their will include reviewing orders, making coffee, delivering, cleaning, keeping inventory, tracking income and expenses and reordering supplies. Students will have to complete a job application to be considered for different positions. The real-world and academic skills we will work on are limitless with this venture!
