At Futures High School, my students have never had the joy of experiencing a school dance or Prom. The majority of our students come from low-income households, and school events have become a bit of a rarity due to a lack of financial support for our ideas. However, with this new school year we found ourselves on a beautiful new campus that finally has enough room for us to celebrate our school culture with a formal dance! My leadership students have gone above and beyond to facilitate making this dance happen in a way that involves all students, despite financial worries. My students have been working for the last 2 months on preparations: choosing a theme, determining fair ticket costs, contacting businesses for donation, promoting the event, creating decorations, fundraising, etc. This event is incredibly important for our on-campus commuity; developing a strong sense of connection on campus has been a priority of my leadership class throughout this school year, and prom is the first event that the entire school is eager for, so our excitement is through the roof! As a school with a primarily low-income population, we are seeking support to help make this event positive and memorable for all students and staff involved! We have already taken care of our food costs, our DJ/music, and our photography. We are hoping to get some support for decorations and lighting elements, as well as items for our Prom dinner.
