Young children need to be able to move around even while working. Studies show that children need more time than the 20-minute recess they are provided to move their bodies in order to be able to focus on academics!
My new philosophy after 15 years of teaching is to allow fidgeting to improve focus! I have two stand-up desks in my room that the kids love, but I would like to have enough alternative seating that every child can have a way to move while learning so they can simultaneously engage both their minds and their bodies.
Students will be able to choose daily whatever seating option works for them. They will be able to choose from the existing stand-up desks and the requested wiggle seats, wobble chairs, or exercise balls.
Colleagues in my school have tried these alternative seating assignments with great success! I can't wait to see the looks on my students' faces when they realize they can move around while working!
