My students come from a rural place, and as residents of an island, they're even more geographically isolated than your typical country kid. They come from primarily low-income families and backgrounds. As a result, they don't have access to the same opportunities in STEM that most kids their age have. They are bright, funny, curious kids that have a natural interest in science, but they have very limited opportunities to interact with scientific research on the island. By having a science fair at the 6th grade level, they're learning that they have the ability to find the answers to their own questions, and they'll gain the confidence they need to succeed in science at higher levels.
