My school is located in a rural area of Las Vegas in a low income, high truant neighborhood. Our school provides 100% of the students free or reduced rate breakfast and lunch. Approximately one-quarter receive a snack at the end of the day. Many of our parents work several jobs to support their families, but many still end up living in single suite hotels or on the street. Yet, even with the struggles our students face, they still come to school eager to learn with smiles on their faces. My first grade classroom is comprised of a diverse community of learners, a majority of which are English Language Learners. For many of my students, the classroom is their safe haven, where they have space to be who they are and take ownership of their learning. In order to have students take ownership of the classroom and their personal space, I want to instill in them the importance of being organized and how that can improve their learning experience.
