There are many skills above and beyond academics that students need to learn in schools. Students learn cooperation, team building and appropriate social interactions through play. While doing these activities, students build their confidence as the tasks are open-ended. Morning Tubs offer my first-grade students an opportunity to do just this. Specifically, students will use Magna-Tiles to build rockets, castles and other imaginative creations. They will put their coding skills to use with the Code and Go Robot, setting up mazes and getting the mouse out. Board games will allow students to work together while thinking critically through multi-step directions.
While working in groups through exploration and building, Morning Tubs will allow students to work collaboratively and creatively.
Students are using their words to describe what it is they are trying to build. They use speaking and listening skills as they help each other through problem-solving. First-graders are developing skills above and beyond academics that they will carry with them forever.
