I teach at a Title I elementary school. A majority of my students are either economically disadvantaged, in a minority, or both. Many of my male students in the 4th and 5th grades lack positive male role models and have a hard time visualizing their future, other than hoping to play in the NFL or NBA. They have so much potential, but may lack the skills and the self-esteem to tap into that potential. These students want to succeed but are unsure how to seek success in positive ways. They need attention, encouragement, and instruction in life skills that go beyond reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.
