My bilingual 2nd graders come from a low-income household. 99% of my students receive free lunch. We are in a suburban area where parents are struggling to meet their basic financial obligations (rent, utilities, food, clothes). The parents of my students are struggling everyday to provide for their families. Many parents have blue collar jobs, seasonal jobs. Their children only see their parents work and believe that they will do the same jobs their parents do because they do not have access to other things.
