My 5th grade students are an inspiration to me!
Although they live in a small, urban community plagued by high-poverty and crime rates, each and every day they enter my math classroom ready and willing to work hard, struggle, ask questions, and help and share their ideas with one another. What is most remarkable about my students is that a majority of them are second language learners; Spanish is the predominant language spoken in their homes. As a result, they are often left to their own devices to complete their homework and study at home. But these challenges serve as further motivation for them!
Possessing incredible potential and insatiable curiosity, my students leave their math anxieties at the door. Although many entered the fifth grade with a basic knowledge of math facts and weak problem solving skills, they have shown remarkable improvements this year and because of their dedication will leave 5th grade with a deeper understanding and appreciation of mathematics.
