Many of my students are at risk, with their basic needs not being met. Some of these basic needs are the ability to learn how to handle and process their emotions, goal setting, and how to handle conflict. From the author of "Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul," "The Successful Principles for Teens" by Jack Canfield is a "how to" guide for teens on how to handle tough life situations effectively. I am teaching a Success class for 9th graders who are starting their high school careers and need these tools to navigate through school, family, and friends. We will read the book, discuss, and work on effective strategies that they can use. Also, students will journal their thoughts on what they read in the book and find ways to apply it. "Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts." Winston Churchill. In order for a student to be successful, we have to teach the whole child. With using this book, many students will learn successful strategies that will decrease the dropout rate.
