Placing books in students hands makes a difference. My students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, which means they mostly do not own technology. Distance learning is rough on them because they can not access our free online books
If I can get books into their hands, they can participate in at-home learning. The stories can be read to them over and over again at home. They can work on summarizing, sequence of events, and relating the stories to their own lives. Students can draw a picture about the story, make up a story with the same theme, and so much more. And after they have the story memorized, they can "read" it to their parents. Then reading on their own begins.
