I always remind students to come prepared to class; that their school supplies are their tools for building knowledge. The assorted supplies are things we adults take for granted; our homes are strewn with random highlighters and sticky notes stuck to important things we want to remember.
My students need these tools because as we say in eighth grade, we are preparing them to be successful young adults. They need to establish these successful habits that will not only help them in high school, but in their long, continued relationship with education. Annotation is one of the trickiest things to learn, so the more practice we have with it now will ensure their continued academic achievement.
