The students who walk into this room everyday come from a variety of homes. Many of them have parents who work long hours and aren't home for dinner. Our school is a majority of free or reduced lunch, with many kids responsible for finding their own dinners when they get home. On average our students are near or below grade level achievement but we have seen them grown in leaps and bounds each year, quickly closing that gap. During the day one of my classes is a co-taught class, where I work with a special education teacher to mainstream special education kids in to the regular education setting. These students are starting the year struggling with math but through hard work they have shown a level of understanding that is meeting their peers.
