I teach 1st grade in a low-income primary school. My classroom consists of 18 students who come from many socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Many of my students have little access to today's technology outside of the walls of our school. Our district has responded to this need by embracing an initiative that will grant equal access to all students by providing each student an iPad.
This initiative has provided our students with endless learning opportunities and changed the landscape of our classrooms and teaching in many ways. The physical atmosphere in which my students learn needs to change in order to meet these new opportunities. By providing my students with comfortable floor pillows and couches, along with desks, standing desks, and tables I can cater to many different learning styles in an environment that is conducive to using technology on a daily basis.
