We go outside every day for at least 30 minutes for active learning as long as the wind chill is not dangerous. Our students look forward to this but do not usually have the warm clothing necessary to go outside to play. Our program is income-based and our families qualify for free preschool.
During our school day, we provide snowpants, boots and mittens for students to use outside. In order to do this, we collect items from friends and family as their children outgrow them and we wrote a grant 12 years ago to pay for some gear. The items students wear are breaking down due to years of play. We have repaired as much as we can but look forward to replenishing our supplies so that all students can run, play, and learn every day in Minnesota!
While outside, our students build social-emotional skills, become physically stonger, play creatively together, and can use their voices in a way that they cannot while we are inside. We discover shadows and butterflies, learn about the seasons changing according to the trees, and race and play games. Our students also play in the sand area and snow creating their own castles and imaginary worlds and use the climbing equipment. Because we live in Minnesota, often we wear boots, mittens, and snowpants between November and April so that outside is an extension of our classroom.
