My students are learning to read with a literacy approach called "Reading Workshop". Instead of using textbooks, we use picture books as a way to discover what good readers do. I have been amazed how my students have gravitated towards using this type of quality literature for learning because it gives them memorable characters and lessons to refer to as they develop their own literacy skills. And using these books gives us a lot to talk about during the school day which is something they love to do!
