My goal with this project is for students to read just for the sake of reading. Too often they're forced to read books that they're not interested in and it turns them off from reading altogether. Which is unfortunate because there are so many amazing books out there, if only students had the opportunity to access them.
These books will go into my classroom library for students to check out and read whenever they want. They can take them home, read them at their leisure, and hopefully come back to check out another one!
The books I've chosen here are written by and feature BIPOC and LGBTQ+ characters, which are wildly different than the books most of them have been forced to read before. My hope is that by finding books that are more relevant, students will be more likely to continue to search out similar books and want to read on their own once they've left high school.
