My students love to read! They are fortunate to be exposed to a school and classroom library that is constantly growing and adapting to their interests and needs. However, when it comes to small group instruction, that variety isn't there. Unfortunately, most short fiction texts are written on a third grade level or below or are extremely boring.
It has been said, "what is a bookshelf, but a treasure box for a curious mind?" I feel as though it is my responsibility to keep the curious minds of my students actively engaged. With well written, beautifully illustrated, and high level picture books, my students will be able to engage in comprehension strategies and critical thinking skills that are meaningful. After all, picture books are for big kids, too!
