My students come from a low socioeconomic and typically unstable background. We are located in an urban district which essentially means we are diverse in race, ethnicity, culture, religion and learning styles. The students I work with have IEPs; I support in the general education setting and the special education classroom. As a whole, we struggle with the continual uneasiness in our bodies (whether hyperactivity, nervousness, pain or hunger) and the emotional state of our minds. We find it hard to learn under these circumstances. Thinking day to day, minute by minute about what is happening in our lives and trying to process what happens around us, makes it a challenge to save room for academic learning. It is my job to help these students access learning like any other student in our school. It is my job to support not only their academic learning but also their development into leaders of our society.
