Having a set of individual rekenreks will help my students develop their number senses. Having a good number sense helps my students create a relationship between numbers. They will be able to see the different ways to create a given number. For example 4+6=10 and 3+7=10. This helps my students with their problem solving skills and helps them discuss different ways to reach the same solution to a problem. It is very important that students understand that their are multiple ways to get to a solution in math. The rekenreks will help develop their number fluency to 20 which is our first grade standard.
Having visuals and hands on manipulatives to use to explain their thinking will help lead to deeper discussions and learning in math. The Floor 120 Chart will be used to show the relationship between larger numbers. They will work on 10 more or 10 less. This chart is larger so the students can actual move around it and see how numbers change as they move horizontally or vertically. They will also be able to continue a pattern that is on the chart. Since one side is blank and the other side of the chart has numbers, this will help differentiate for the different abilities in my classroom.
The students will be able to model and give better evidence of their thinking using both of these math tools. Understanding these concepts will help them when we discuss place value and even larger numbers in 2nd grade.
