Our students are working on strengthening their cores and seated endurance. In these early years of school, they are establishing skills that will be the foundation for their educational and life success. Many students have a difficult time sitting still for lessons and independent work. This leads to distracted students during lessons, trouble recalling information, time lost on redirection, and poor posture/complaints of back pain. Imagine - first graders with back pain! Through the use of seating cushions, sensory cushions and mini-desks, my students will be able to attend to and be more efficient in their daily tasks. It will also allow them to feel more comfortable in the classroom and their daily lives.
Not all of our students feel comfortable sitting in a chair at their desk during independent work or on our carpet during group instruction. Many of our kiddos need sensory input to stay focused during group activities. Through the use of textured chair cushions, students will be able to sit still for longer periods of time as well as strengthen their core muscles. Mini-desks will allow students to move around the room to work on independent assignments while still having a stable writing/work area. By offering different types of seating for our students, we can provide them with a better overall learning experience!
