My first graders come from a low-income community and all receive free lunch at our Title 1 school. They came to my classroom all on a kindergarten reading level or even lower, as I have at least 8 native Spanish speakers in my classroom. They had no confidence in their academic abilities and told me they were probably not even going to make it to high school. No first grader should ever feel that way. This year we have fostered a love of learning and seeing my students enter that doorway with a smile and leave each day reminding me that they are "college bound" is so inspiring. They are a little family and help and encourage each other every day to do their best work. My first graders have worked so hard and have already made huge academic gains in just the first semester and have no plans to stop any time soon!
